Micron Technology announced a new strategic investment plan on July 9, committing USD 3 billion to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on overseas chip manufacturing.
As a core part of the plan, Micron will provide USD 500 million in strategic financing to GlobalWafers America, supporting construction of a 300mm silicon wafer manufacturing plant in Sherman, Texas.
Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said strengthening domestic supply capabilities is strategically important amid sustained global chip demand growth and geopolitical uncertainty.
Following the announcement, Micron shares rose 7% on the day. Analysts believe the investment will further strengthen Micron's competitiveness in the global memory market.
